Cost of gemstones, therefore, depends heavily on how the buyer sees the gemstone value. Have you also thought about knowing exactly from one article all about these precious stones and precious gems?

There are a variety of gemstones. For instance, there is ruby, diamond, sapphires, etc. However, we can not deny the fact that the thing about some over-the-top premium gemstones like rose quartz, opal, and aquamarine still stands out. These gemstones are valued differently. For example, valuation like gemstone price per carat or gemstone price per ratti.

Sapphire price per carat, for example, can range ₹ 3 lakh per carat ($4675 approx.) and goes up to ₹ 10 lakh per carat ($15500 approx.) What makes them so precious? How is the price determined? What are the factors that decide the same?

Let us reflect on the factors that affect the price of gemstones.

From the lens of different people and the economics of market penetration, the prices will differ. You'll ask us why to read what we have got to share with you.

The fundamental factors that play a role in price determination are the

  • The physical appearance of the stone - how beautiful do they look, how colorful, how lustrous, how perfectly crafted are they, etc
  • Durability, that is, what is the period they remain ‘as they are
  • Rarity, that is,how unique are they, based on their availability
  • Traditional significance/ religious significance

Let us look into all the factors in a bit more detail -
1. Beauty - As the name suggests, it is a gem. The stone is given with boundless beauty. The ones not portrayed with layers of glam and texture of royalty are not considered gems. Therefore, beauty comes as an implied standard or a prerequisite for gems.
2. Durability - It is nothing but psychology that on things we have gone beyond our limits to invest in, we want to keep them with us longer. By this, we didn't mean that it cannot be destroyed and some magic happens on it to stay forever. But, it could be expected from a gemstone to be having high bars on its corrosion. Unlike cheap metals, they do not oxidize so easily and their charm sits on them for years and centuries.
3. Rarity - Get reminded of the quote ‘Be aware that you are rare!” This very well applies to the gemstones as well. They are given a privileged position and are valued by people all around the country. The more available the gemstone is, the less its value is. The lesser it is found, the rarer it becomes.

For example, there is a gemstone called Amethyst. It is one of the most adorned stones. But, since the ming procedure is not so sophisticated, it is easily accessed, which increases its availability.

4. Demand - Also known as the Vogue, the price of the gemstones highly depends on the demand. The law of demand talks about the marginal utility, that is, more demand makes the commodity, here, gemstones, look more attractive, and ultimately, this increases their market value or prices. One more aspect of it is the publicity or the advertising programs being campaigned behind the marketing of such gems. Mostly, such markets are dictated by ongoing trends and patterns.

5. Tradition - Another key determinant of the price of the gemstone is its traditional/regional significance. It is quite evident that if there is some attached interest to the stone, it will ultimately rank higher in the price list of the gemstone.

6. Portability - Since gemstone is a massive wealth accommodated in such a miniature gem, the transportation of such objects becomes a duty of higher order. This levies the safety and security deals high on such precious gemstones. Because of the care and precaution, it needs to be handled with, there arises a graph of its royal status. This has often been a great factor in the consideration of the purchase.

Four C’s of gemstones

Gemologists grade the gemstones based on the factors that we have seen above. In addition to this, there are certain C’s in a frame as well. These are:

  • Color
  • Clarity
  • Cut
  • Carat

Let us now see what all four of them are -

1. Color - When we talk about color, we take into consideration the graphics such as hue, tone, and saturation. This could be red, green, blue, etc. The tone is relative lightness and dark. Lately, saturation is the intensity of the hue. Soft or strong hues are examples.

2. Clarity - Gemstones, being so much in demand, it is natural that there could be some issues with the original pieces being graded off from the fake ones. These can contain some bits of minerals, corroded surfaces, and fractures.
Clarity grading takes care of the visual and structural impact of these things. Colored gems are also grouped into three clarity types: “Type I,” usually eye-clean; “Type II,” usually included; and “Type III,” almost always included.

3. Cut - Cut defines the fashioning aspect of the gemstone. As fine as the quality of it is, the look and feel of anything certainly matters in the limelight. It has a massive and direct effect on a gem’s price. The cut is something that a non-professional could hardly judge due to the multi-fold variations included.

4. Carat - A carat is a unit used for the measurement of gem weight. One carat is equal to 1/5th of a gram, that is, 200 milligrams.

However, there is a difference between Carat and Ratti

A Carat is a unit of measurement used to express the size or weight of a stone. The expression was first only applied to diamonds. The majority of other stones are now covered by it. The weight of a natural gemstone is expressed in carats, which are abbreviated "ct".

The term "carat" has considerable ambiguity because gold is also measured in "karats" or "carats."

On the other hand, the invention of "Ratti '' was made possible because of the lack of precise digital weighing apparatus, tools, and technology. Truly said, necessity is the mother of invention. The standard weight of a Ratti, a traditional mass measurement unit, is 0.12125 grams.

The Ratti is a commonly used measurement for the weight of various types of jewels, especially astrological gemstones. A Ratti has 180 milligrams.

Price Tiers of Gemstones

We just talked about the grading, budding from the same concept, we can roughly categorize the gemstones into three compartments. These three price groups in the order of hierarchy are: Most Expensive, Middle of the Road, and lastly, Cheap.

The Most Expensive Gemstones are the ones that are rare, elegant, and durable. For example, Diamond, Ruby, Emerald, and Sapphire are the priciest gems.

Mid-Range Gemstones: They are the ones that are not so rare but are also not the most accessible. They require some expertise for a professional to differentiate the original stones from the rest.

Some of them are queued: Peridot, Aquamarine, and Morganite

Affordable gems include amethyst, citrine, garnet, and topaz. These are not so rare and are considered to be in the price ranges of not-so extraordinary people in terms of wealth.

Quality of gemstones

The quality of any gemstone is the heart of its place in the market. Have you visited a blog website and moved out of it just because it has an unreadable font and pictures that look cliche? Yes, right? That is all. We get attracted naturally to quality. The website with higher resolution pictures and beautiful fonts attracts us. And then, these are Gemstones. Their grading is based on quality. Although there is no specific scale to grade them, The Factors involving 4C’s are generally the yardsticks by moist jewelers to define the quality of the gemstones they are trading in.
